James Clyne is a highly accomplished film industry designer with a wealth of experience in the field. He began his artistic journey by studying fine art at UC Santa Barbara, where he honed his skills in oil painting and photography. His inspiration came from master painters and the way they used light to convey emotion. Later, he enrolled at the Art Center College of Design, where he studied automotive, industrial, and film production design.
At Art Center, James was exposed to the works of Raymond Lowey, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Syd Mead. These designers greatly influenced his artistic style, and he used their techniques to develop his own unique look. Since then, James has collaborated on over forty films and television series, working in various capacities related to visualization.
One of the highlights of James's career was working with Steven Spielberg. On A.I. and Minority Report, he designed specific production assets and created imagery that informed the movies' overall look, tone, and feel. James also served as the Production Designer on an unproduced animated feature called Tusker in 2008, which was a magical film about a tribe of Indian elephants.
James has worked with many other industry giants, including James Cameron on Avatar, JJ Abrams on both Star Trek films, Robert Zemeckis, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Patty Jenkins, Darren Aronofsky, Terry Gilliam, and Rian Johnson, among others.
In 2013, James joined Lucasfilm/ILM and had the opportunity to work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As an Art Director, his work was well-received, and he continued to work on the Star Wars franchise for 10 years.
As the Lucasfilm Design Supervisor, James oversaw a creative team on Solo: A Star Wars Story and Episode 9 The Rise of Skywalker, splitting his time working in the US and the UK.
In 2020, James had the opportunity to work in collaboration with Gareth Edwards, Production Designing his 2023 film The Creator. Traveling to both Thailand and the UK, he not only supervised the production of the film, but continued to oversee the creative thread well into Post Production.
James continues to develop and push the visualization of movie making, implementing new tools along the way, but at the same time never forgetting the learned lessons and joy of the timeless act of filmmaking and the creative process.
